Mission
Maeko Basketball is committed to developing a competitive youth basketball program within our community. Our mission is to encourage children of all ages to become active and stay involved in basketball. We believe that a strong youth program leads to happier, healthier, and more productive children.
Coach Omar Leary
Coach Omar was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. He attended Lincoln High School where he was a standout basketball player and a Portland Interscholastic League Hall of Fame Inductee '19. Coach Omar received a full ride scholarship to the University of Oklahoma. As a student athlete, he majored in Multidisciplinary Studies and reached the NCAA Elite Eight in his senior season with the Sooners. After graduating, Coach Omar honed in on his passion for coaching and being a youth leader. Coach Omar has served several roles at the elementary, middle, and high school level. He also spent two seasons assisting the men's basketball team at the University of Oklahoma and Western Oregon University. For six seasons, Coach Omar combined his love of basketball and mentoring in his role as the Youth Basketball Specialist with the Portland Trail Blazers. Since completing his Master in Education, Coach Omar has enjoyed teaching and growing The Maeko Basketball program, through teams, camps, clinics, training, and volunteering. He is proud that Maeko Basketball values anti-racism and equity, and gives everyone a voice by building belonging while fostering empathy and social cohesion. In Coach Omar's free time he enjoys a good meal, spending time with his family, and traveling.
